Interface design for young vs. old users.
I was thinking about possibly tying this in with library websites. I know some libraries (such as the Buffalo & Erie County Public Library) have made parts of their site specific to younger users and design with specific criteria in mind (color, layout, navigation, etc). This might be interesting to explore. Just now having quickly browsed through some of the library literature I've found quite a few articles relating to interface design for children.

Designing interfaces for libraries (the "Social empowerment and exclusion: A case study on digital libraries" article would probably be useful for this).
Security and anonymity's impact on interface: There is always a balance that has to be reached between user convenience and security. (captia, secure passwords to avoid dictionary attacks, rotation of passwords.) With new technologies such as secureid and keychain, can we make security less painful and more transparent?

Tab Trees: Although simple, tabs are the most important browser innovation in a long time. How can we improve them? Explore the possibilities of a tab tree, each branch representing a different browsing path. Requirements of such an interface (eg. must not take up much more screen real-estate than the current tab bar.)

Search Engine Interfaces: Ask is encroaching on google's search empire with a better search algorithm and some interesting interface ideas. Compare and contrast the interfaces, what works, what could be improved and how?

Interfaces for kids vs adults. Generally interfaces are dumbed down for kids apps even though they can pick up new ideas far quicker than adults. Kids do not rely on preconceived schemas as much as adults allowing for more innovation. What rules are there for designing for those groups.

Web Accessibility Issues: What are federal and state guidelines? How can you design for accessibility? What tools do you need? - text readers? Etc?

Search Engine Optimization: machine readable vs human readable, black hat/white hat, what tools exist for evaluating search engine ranking?
