POPPING THE SEAMS

RESISTANCE VECTORS AND THE DAILY FABRIC

On the radio: “Where does art impact politics?”

On Thursday July 12, 9am-10am PST David Lester of Mecca Normal will be on Seattle’s KUOW speaking on the role of art in politics, especially in times of conflict.

Where does art impact politics? Is there a point where political art becomes polemic, rather than artistic? Where is that point? Where can art succeed in changing political regimes or movements where protestors/lobbyists are unsuccessful? What is the role of art in times of conflict? What is the relationship between art and war?

The radio discussion is fascinating and fills me with enthusiasm for this blog. It is complex, this popping seam where art might get stitched to politics. First, what the hell do these words even mean? Politics. Is there ever a situation with human beings that is not infused with politics? One of the speakers on the radio, the fellow with the basso profundo, mentions that ever present quality. I love hearing that Mecca Normal had an instrumental piece selected as one of the top political songs. A wordless politics of what? Mood? Stance? Form? Example? Conscious direction of production technique? Selective distribution?

I enjoyed reading Mecca Normal’s early history here:
